Balázs HORVÁTH was born in Budapest in 1976. He studied composition at theFerenc Liszt Academy of Music, Budapest where he received his degree with honours (Summa cum Laude) in 1999. His professors included Zoltán JENEY, Attila BOZAY, and János VAJDA. He has finished his PhD in Composition at the Liszt Academy in 2005, while teaching there as well.

HORVÁTH regularly appears at significant events of contemporary music. He attended several music seminars lead by Dr. Richard CORNELL, Louis ANDRIESSEN, Robert HP PLATZ, Rodney SHARMEN, Brian FERNEYHOUGH, Michael JARRELL, Marco STROPPA, Denis SMALLEY, Andrea SZIGETVÁRI, Péter Eötvös and Karlheinz STOCKHAUSEN. In 2003 he has been an assistant of Michael JARRELL and Jonathan HARVEY at the Bartók Seminar.

Beside winning several prizes at competitions his pieces are performed in Hungary and abroad as well. His pieces has been performed at the 25th Centre Acanthes Festival in Villeneuve-lez-Avignon, the Budapest Autumn Festival, the Gaudeamus Music Week in Amsterdam, the Bartók Seminar in Szombathely, the Music of Today in London or the prestigious Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival.

It was commisioned by the Hungarian Cultural Centre, London and performed by UMZE Ensemble, Budapest with Zsolt NAGY.

On October 17, 2005 six of his compositions were performed at a portait concert organised by the Budapest Autumn Festival, among which three were world premieres. The conductor of the concert was HORVÁTH himself and his collegue, Gergely VAJDA. Between 2000 and 2002 Balázs HORVÁTH was recipient of the Zoltán KODÁLY Scholarship.

In 2004 Balázs HORVÁTH received the Benedek ISTVÁNFFY-prize for MAGNETS IV (round and round).
